Twitter is now the fastest-growing social platform on the planet, beating Facebook and Google+for the top spot, new research suggests.

The number of active users on the microblogging service grew 40% from the second quarter to the fourth quarter of 2012 — equal to 288 million monthly active users, according to Global Web Index, a syndicated market-research service on web behavior and social media. (The indexassessed 31 markets, and defines “active” as those who claim to “have used or contributed to Twitter in the past month.

In July 2009, it estimated that Twitter only had 35.47 million monthly active users. Since then, the social network has seen an impressive growth rate of 714%.

Users are also more engaged, with 59% of account holders now active on a monthly basis.

1-23-2012 11-07-07 AMTwitter has apologized for highlighting porn Monday morning in the “Editors’ Picks” category of its video-sharing app Vine, citing a “human error.”

The app — which launched last week and allows users to create and share six-second GIF-like looping videos — featured a not-safe-for-work video as an Editors’ Pick before it was promptly removed. Editors’ Picks are hand-selected by staff to display the most creative and interesting videos posted to the app.

Many Vine users posted comments to the video, expressing disappointment and threatening to delete the app.

Over the weekend, users started to notice that videos saved via the Vine app with hashtags such as #porn and #sex revealed graphic videos, many of which had a warning that the following content contained sensitive content.

Barack Obama, Mitt Romney and other politicians across the country are constantly asking followers to pitch in money to their campaign — but do those pitches actually work?

According to Twitter, absolutely.

The company commissioned a study from data research firm Compete and found the average Twitter user is 68% more likely than the average Internet user to visit a campaign donation page. Meanwhile, 97% of Twitter users exposed to political tweets are more likely than other users to visit a campaign donation page.

However, the study also found that political tweets drive a greater increase in traffic (97%) to donation pages than in overall visits to political sites (72%). It’s impossible to know if a person who visits a donation page actually donates, but Twitter argues in its blog post that these numbers mean tweets “drive people to these sites with a greater intent to donate.”

Do you think Twitter can drive donations? Have you donated to a political campaign because of what you saw on Twitter?

After analyzing the Twitter profiles of 36 million users who have generated more than 28 billion tweets (that’s 794 tweets per person in three years on average), Beevolve’s social analytics research reveals user follower bases directly correlate with how much they tweet.

A Twitter user who has written 1 to 1000 tweets has an average of 51 to 100 followers, whereas users who have tweeted more than 10,000 times tend to be followed by 1,001 to 5000 individuals. It’s estimated that a person with more than 15,000 tweets has between 100,001 to 1 million followers.

Beevolve’s report, called “An Exhaustive Study of Twitter Users Around the World,” takes a look at users’ demographics, follower stats, gender preferences, favorite keywords and smartphone/app preferences.

Facebook wasn’t the only one interested in purchasing the photo-filtering wonder application in snapping up photo-sharing app Instagram last week for $1 billion.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey was one of the early backers of Instagram, investing in the service in February 2011. Dorsey was also a part of the beta of Instagram and tweeted pictures using the service before it was available to the public, adding buzz around the app’s release.

While Dorsey has posted quite a few Instagram photos over the past year, his Instagram stream has gone silent since the Facebook acquisition of the service.
